A site-specific floating art installation

More than 70 guests came out to celebrate with us this April for an intimate sunset viewing of Euphoria, a site-specific floating art installation by contemporary artist Benedicte Blanc-Fontenille at the historic Vagabond Motel. The exhibition was a presentation of miniature paintings floating in water that mimicked the movements and forms of waterlilies exploring the rudiments of fragility, balance, meditation, movement and rebirth.

“Like waterlilies move at the surface of the water, the works playfully follow the movement of the currents, imperfectly fragile yet balanced. They go underwater and another life begins for them: they fly like stingrays, lay down, rest for a while and go back dancing.” — Blanc-Fontenille

Establishing itself in the global arts market as a leading Miami-based gallery in 2012, Gauchet Fine Art tapped a select group to build it repertoire of artists from across America and Europe. Of this selection was contemporary sculptor Mariko. Defying traditional modes of sculpture with the incorporation of found metal objects, her works are best noted for their harmonious balance and fusion between Cubism and Primitive Art.

“Her bronze statues are a main example of her use of proportion and balance and play on femininity, says Gallery Founder Kristelle GauchetMariko’s works are ones to be watched amongst the larger contemporary and fine art worlds, and we are excited that her pieces have been acquired into private collections here in Miami. Each of her subjects portray avant-garde realism making them exceptional works of art for public exposition and collecting value.”

In addition to her bronze series, she is also known for her large-scale sandstone characters portraying animals and human figures, which had much to do with her upbringing in Madagascar and early fascination with Malagasy craftsmanship. While living in Kenya, Mariko first began carving with sandstone, learning specific features of the exceptional material and the rudiments of the technique by the Maasai craftsmen. Later on, while studying at Les Beaux-Arts in France, she also became influenced by the teachings of the early-20th-century avant-garde Cubism Movement, particularly the transformation of volumes and shapes, pioneered by Georges Braque (1882-1963) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973).

Mariko’s works will debut this season as part of a new gallery exhibition entitled Modern Femme: on view from February 15th to March 15th, 2017 at Gauchet Fine Art – Miami Ironside Art & Design district.
